Nearly everyone over the age of twenty-five can relate to the limitations of ‘old 
school’ fluorescent lighting, which was a mainstay in school classrooms across the country for decades. The long, skinny tubes of flickering, blue-white light, often accompanied by a dull hum, were as common a sight in our educational buildings as a chalkboard. Energy-efficient lighting has come a long way since those days, as fluorescent technology has improved by leaps and bounds, and newer technologies such as light-emitting diodes (LED’s) are also pushing consumers towards more eco-friendly lighting solutions.
While lighting technology may be pushing the envelope, it is consumers who are leading the charge into some of the most significant changes the lighting industry has ever seen. Government legislation has also played a role, as California’s Title 20 is an example of legislation at the state level that requires stricter guidelines for manufacturers of lighting fixtures and portables. Regardless of what may be driving the movement, one thing is for certain; lighting design is likely to undergo radical change as fixtures are modified to accommodate multiple types of energy-efficient lighting sources.
