Indoor Lighting for a Dark Space

Indoor Lighting for a Dark Space
The darkest places in our homes are often the ones we struggle to light adequately. Often lacking a window for natural light, closets, laundry rooms and attics are often equipped with little more than an exposed, pull chain light bulb to light the room.
You may not be keen on springing for expensive lighting for these dark spaces, and we don't blame you. However, dark spaces still need to be well-lit! Here are some economical ideas for lighting your home's dark spaces.
-
In The Closet: For smaller closets, one of the best lighting solutions is a fluorescent light over the door, on the inside. It'll provide plenty of light and save energy. It's extremely economical, and you'll never even notice the light fixture itself.
For large closets, consider adding recessed lighting.
-
In the Laundry Room: To light a dark laundry room with cabinets, consider using under cabinet lights. They're fairly easy to install, and add valuable task lighting above your washer and dryer! Be sure to install them toward the front of the cabinets.
For laundry rooms without cabinets, a ceiling light with sufficient wattage will get the job done. Consider an Energy Star ceiling light, which will last much longer.
- In the Attic: You probably don't spend a lot of time here, but attics should still be well-lit for safety reasons. While the pull chain light bulb dominates many closet, a much safer option is an economical ceiling light with a light switch you can control from the bottom.
