Mercury glass is an eye-catching, textured look that is gaining popularity in lighting and home decor. It combines a beautiful metallic shine with the intrigue of something that looks aged and rustic. It’s a glass decorating technique that dates back to the 1800s, when mercury glass was made in two different ways:
-blowing the glass, adding a solution of silver nitrate and glucose, heating the glass and sealing (known as silvering)
-placing a silver solution between the layers of blown double-walled glass and sealing the silver inside (often used for vases, goblets and so on)
The glass was then further decorated with techniques like painting and engraving. Mercury glass is actually considered one of the first types of art glass–glass that was made especially for its beauty and for display instead of for utilitarian uses.
